Volunteer Managers’ Forum – Training Needs Analysis

At today’s Volunteer Managers’ Forum, we discussed the training needs of volunteer managers in South Derbyshire. From this it is clear that we could do with a session that is a general introduction to volunteer management. We will set this up soon.

In addition, we have circulated the Training Needs analysis carried out by the countywide network of Volunteer Centres, Volunteer Centres Derbyshire.

Bearing A Torch for the Olympics

June 29th is the deadline for nominations for volunteers to be an Olympic torch-bearer in Derby/ Derbyshire next year.

The press release is as follows:

Time Ticking To Nominate Torch Bearers

There is less than a month left in a campaign being run by LOCOG for people to nominate someone special to carry the Olympic Torch into Derby.

Last month the city was gripped by 2012 fever with news that the Olympic Torch will visit Derby as part of a 70-day relay tour of the UK ahead of next year’s Games. It is fantastic news which will put Derby in the global spotlight – with the wider public, businesses and stakeholders across Derbyshire including the University of Derby, Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council and many others looking forward to this landmark occasion. Around 8,000 torchbearers are needed to carry the torch on its way around the country, with 90% chosen from public nominations. And in Derbyshire, the BBC Big Screen, co-managed by the University, will capture the local stages of the torch relay.

Organisers LOCOG – the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games – is looking for ‘inspirational people’ who have made a contribution in their community as part of the Moment to Shine campaign. The deadline for entries is June 29. It aims to choose 2,012 torch bearers nationally, although sponsors Samsung, Coca-Cola and Lloyds TSB will also launch separate appeals. Rory Slater, Derbyshire’s 2012 Legacy Coordinator said: “This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of this special event in Derby. We encourage nominations from all walks of life – but time is ticking to get those entries in!” LOCOG are keen for a wide range of society to be represented through the torch relay so the appeal goes out to worthy names within the charitable sector, the business sector, young people, sports coaches and athletes to name but a few. In Derby, we are planning a series of cultural celebrations which will take place at various city locations enabling every community to be part of this global event. The eyes of the world will be on Derby and to get into the spirit of the Games, we will welcome the arrival of the Olympic Flame to Derby on the evening of the 29 June, where the Celebration Cauldron will be lit followed by an exciting ceremony and stage show. The celebrations will showcase our diverse communities and our rich cultural life over the weekend and all the events and activities will be free of charge and open to all people from the city and beyond.

Style On A Shoestring – The Cheque Presentation

Back in March 2011, we organised Style on A Shoestring in partnership with the British Heart Foundation.

This week, we presented the cheque for £428 to the BHF for their share of the proceeds.

City & Guilds 7300 – Introduction to Trainer Skills

This 2 day accredited course is based on the training cycle, and covers:

planning (including session planning)
delivery (participants will deliver a 10 or 15 minute ‘session’ that they have planned)
evaluation (self, peer group and course evaluation)

The course also covers:

presenting yourself
effective communication
setting ground rules
use of icebreakers
the learning environment
training resources
gaining and maintaining attention
motivation
assessment

To gain the accreditation the knowledge and practical skills gained on the course will be assessed by:

a short multiple choice quiz
an observation (by the course tutor) of the participants’ 10/15 minute micro-teach, on which they will receive feedback.

Next Course Dates:

Wednesday 6th & 13th July 2011 9.30am – 4.00pm both days

(including light refreshments)

Course & Accreditation fees are £100.00, where eligible funding is not available.

Derbyshire VCI Passport Training Dates Set

Almost exactly a month ago, we announced that we would be running a series of free accredited training session for volunteers who work with children or young people. This accreditation is known as the VCI Passport.

We are delighted to announce that we now have a series of dates booked for this training at the Swadlincote Learning Centre.

Thursday 14^th July 09:00 – 4:30.
Wednesday 20^th July 09:00– 4:30.
Thursday 21^st July 09:00 – 1:00.

This is a county-wide accredited training programme that has been developed by the County Council and the voluntary sector to address the initial training needs of organisations and volunteers in this sector.

The course consists of five 3-hour modules covering:

Equality and Diversity
Safeguarding
Health and Safety
First Aid
Consulting Children and Young People

Each of these sessions will be delivered by approved trainers provided by Derbyshire County Council. At least two of the session will be led by Chris Harris, who you may already know as the Operations Director here at South Derbyshire CVS.

If you’ve already contacted us about a place on this training, we will contact you direct in the next couple of days, however, we still have places available, so if you are interested, please download the VCI Passport South Derbyshire Interest Form and return it completed to chrisw@sdcvs.org.uk for each volunteer.

A while ago, we had an events page here on the blog, but we were not able to keep it up to date due to pressures of time and resources. However, it is now possible to include a Google Docs Calendar here, so we are going to try again. With this, you will be able to add your own events to the calendar.
