Summer Reading Challenge

Here’s a great volunteering opportunity for young people.

23 July – 6 September 2010

Are you aged 14-19?

We need volunteers to listen to children chat about books!

What’s in it for you?

  • Experience the rewards of working with children
  • Experience the rewards of working with children
  • Help others – make a difference in your community
  • Build your confidence – learn to do something new
  • Gain valuable skills for future employment
  • Work towards a national volunteering award!

What is the Summer Reading Challenge?

Children are challenged to read up to 6 books and talk to library staff or volunteers about them. Children collect stickers and other rewards as they progress through the challenge. In Derbyshire, more than 7,000 children take part each year!

For the thousands of children who complete the challenge, we hold presentation ceremonies where they are awarded with a medal and certificate.

What will my role be?

Volunteers are needed during July and August 2010 to:

  • Register children for the challenge
  • Explain to children and their parents how to take part
  • Encourage children to discuss what they have been reading
  • Give out rewards

Where and when?

Lots of libraries across Derbyshire – including Swadlincote Library.

What skills do I need?

Summer Reading Challenge volunteers need good communication skills and an interest in working with children. Training will be given.

Complete the Summer Reading Challenge Volunteer Registration Form and return it to any Derbyshire Library by Monday 14th June 2010

As this volunteering opportunity involves working with children, a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check may be made as part of the volunteer registration process.
