Do Something different in 2011 is the message from Waterway Recovery Group (WRG), which has launched its new programme of residential volunteering opportunities, known as “Canal Camps”, designed to restore the derelict canals of England and Wales to their former glory. Canal Camps give you the chance to do your bit for the environment whilst having a fun holiday.
Check out their holidays at www.wrg.org.uk.
Mike Palmer, WRG Chairman explains: “This year we have a great selection of locations for our canal camps, including the reappearance of some old favourites, such as the Montgomeryshire and the Cotswolds canals.”
There are 22 canal camps this year, including one on the Cromford canal here in Derbyshire and at Burton on Trent for the National Waterways Festival.
It’s a totally unique volunteering opportunity and participants can learn new skills to impress employers, as well as the chance to be part of the team that really make a huge difference to the waterways.
Your volunteering “holiday” will cost you £8 per day as a contribution towards all your meals and accommodation – that’s only £56 for a week.
You don’t need any previous experience; just a willingness to get involved and a good sense of fun.
