One of the greatest dilemmas faced by volunteer managers is how to balance the time and energy needed to meet the needs of volunteers with the time and energy needed to support the people or service that the volunteers are there to deliver. The Volunteer Centre South Derbyshire, like Volunteer Centres across the county are seeing a marked increase in the numbers of people with additional support needs who want to volunteer, certainly have something to offer, but who will need help and support to become a volunteer.
What would you do? Would you turn that volunteer away because you don’t have the time, capacity or inclination to provide that support, or would you welcome that volunteer and find a way to use his or he energy and enthusiasm?
Our February Volunteer Manager’s Forum will address this issue by discussing whether we could make minor changes to our volunteer programmes that could include more volunteers with, for example, mental health issues, learning disabilities or other barriers to volunteering.
Whether you are worried about involving such hard-to-reach volunteers, have had negative experiences or take it all in your stride every day, your fears, views, ideas, and comments will be very welcome at the next South Derbyshire Volunteer Manager’s Forum on Thursday 24th February 2011.
The forum meeting will be held at:
South Derbyshire CVS
46-48 Grove Street
Between 10:00 and 12:00.
If you’re lucky we might even run to a chocolate biscuit or two.
